Further Who Thoughts

According to sources, one of either Colin Baker, Paul McGann, Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy or Peter Davison will be in the feature length special episode alongside Tennant’s Doctor and the current incumbent Matt Smith.

Radio Times

I wouldn’t have posted that if it hadn’t come from the Radio Times. I’ve seen the rumour before but it sounded so outlandish. Now, as far as I can see the only reason to include Paul McGann in a list of ‘possible guest stars’ is that the guest star is Paul McGann. If you wanted to throw some possibilities in there to disguise the truth you wouldn’t pick the guy who had one movie.

It also makes sense that McGann’s ‘lost era’, the time between his movie and the emergence of Ecclestone’s Doctor in the new series is the Time War which we now know will feature prominently in the 50th.

Add this to the adamant assurance from some members of the cast that this is a story about three Doctors and three only then I’m forced to go all-in on my theory.

Three Doctors. Four Actors. Paul McGann and John Hurt both portray the Eighth Doctor at different points in his life.

(This is as much wishful thinking as prediction.)

So, Doctor Who

I’ve had this theory kicking around for a while now regarding Doctor Who. I’ve shared it with Zoe. I’ve shared it with friends. Here it is:

Introducing John Hurt As The Doctor

Step One: Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor.

Who is he? He’s ‘The Doctor’, it says so right there on the screen. I don’t think that’s misdirection because misdirection tends to be cleverer than lying in an on-screen caption. I’m perfectly willing to take at face-value that he’s The Doctor.

Another widely bandied theory is that he’s the generation before William Hartnell’s ‘first’ Doctor, as we never saw him born or regenerated into. That’d throw off all the numbers and be a radical change to Doctor Who! I can’t see it. I can’t see anyone who loves Doctor Who wanting to force the fans to say ‘The First Doctor, chronologically rather than canonically’ when referring to a character when those words are so inextricably linked to Hartnell.

My personal theory? He’s Eight.

The Set-Up

I’ve been neglecting my blog recently, it seems. Part of that is probably because I’ve been busy but that’s a poor excuse. Part of it is certainly because if I’ve had a thought to express there are places for me to do that quicker and easier than wordpress. Twitter seems to have been winning. Thankfully I’ve got something to write about that I just can’t fit in 140 characters so here I am again.

I played Pathfinder last weekend. In itself this isn’t a shocking revelation, I’m pretty sure lots of people played Pathfinder over the course of last week and many of them played on the weekend. People who know me, though, know that there are two arguments against my playing Pathfinder. One is that I typically don’t enjoy high fantasy and the other is that I don’t typically enjoy D&D.

My interest was inspired by a video linked to from a gaming group I follow on Facebook. Specifically, this video:
